Aphids

QUESTION
I remember reading once that a mild solution of water and dish soap sprayed on roses can rid them of aphids. Is this true? What kind of dish soap? Ivory liquid comes to mind.

ANSWER
Hello Paula,

Yes you can use Ivory soap together with horticultural oil to get rid of aphids. However, there is a faster and better method that I use myself.

Simply use your garden hose nozzle and blast them off with water. Do this daily during the early morning hours when aphids are most active.

The season for aphids varies with the climate zones. I garden in Los Angeles, so here it's March - April when the new growths appear after the January pruning.

Aphids go after the new tender growths only. So that's where you spray the water.

Hope this helps.
