Golden Showers Climbing Rose

by Leonard Stevens
(Sarasota Florida U.S.A.)

About 5 months ago I bought and planted it.

Although it seems to be growing well with 3 or 4 ft. long stems there is no sign of any flowers yet.

Does it flower on this new wood or do I have to wait until next year ?

I have given it some phosphate for help with flowers.

Hi Leonard

Climbing roses many times won't flower until the next season.

Golden Showers bloom on new wood, produced by the short lateral shoots, that grow from the long stems.

They use up all their energy growing long canes, from which flowering shoots will grow from.

If you train the canes horizontally, that is.

If you let the long canes grow straight up, you will only have flowers at the top.

Also I noticed that you are in Florida.

The hot weather there during the summers, will cause roses to take a flowering break then.

Do not prune the long canes, or the rose will suffer a set back.
