Knock Out Rose Pruning

My roses are turning into large shrub looking roses. Is it ok to cut them say about 1ft. now? They are about 5ft. tall and are looking bad. I live in Edwardsville Il.

It's too late to prune Knockouts back now. Pruning them, will encourage new cold tender growth, that can suffer from winter kill if you have an early coldsnap.
Next season, trim back the Knockout roses after every bloom flush during the summer. It will keep them looking good.
Stop doing that middle of September.
