Knock Out Roses Leaves
QUESTIONI planted knock out roses last spring and now that cold weather is here the leaves are mostly golden with some orange. There are some green leaves as well. Is there a problem with the bushes? What to do?
ANSWER Hello Mary!
Your knockout roses are going dormant. This is normal and you don't have to anything. But you should put a foot of mulch around the base of the rose bush to help it through the winter. And give it a good soak of water to hydrate the canes, if the ground hasn't frozen yet.
Just to let you know, we are having unusually cold weather here in Los Angeles, and my knockout roses leaves are the same as yours.
I am pruning them tomorrow actually. This is pruning time in Southern California. Not for your area though.
But when you do prune in spring, strip all the leaves off the bush and spray the canes and the soil area with a Dormant Oil Spray .
This will kill any over-wintering fungus spores and insect eggs that could attack you rose when it starts growing again.
