My Rose Stems Are Turning Black

QUESTION
My rose bush stems are turning black at the top. The center of the bush is green but I'm worried. Is it sick?

ANSWER
Hello Allison,
Black canes are dead canes. You need to prune down to live canes.
It's possible your canes have been invaded by cane borers.
This usually happens when cane borers enter the canes and start eating away.
After pruning down to live wood, take some clear nail polish or Elmers Glue and seal the canes with it, so they won't enter the freshly pruned canes.
Best Regards,
Annelie
