I'm from the Oxnard Plains in Ventura County where you just put a plant in the ground and water it and it grows. The biggest problem is making sure the whiteflies don't get it.

When I first moved to Los Angeles I was surprised that people had to spread fertilizer all over their lawn every year.

Occasionally you'd see someone do that in Ventura County if they were putting new sod in but it wasn't necessary. The best lawns were usually the ones where people just tossed seed around and watered. The soil in that area is rich because the north west end of the Santa Monica Mountains is volcanic and I guess spewed ash all over the place at some point.
Answer: Thanks for your comment about the rich soil in Ventura County.
If you garden in Ventura California you are very lucky gardeners.
