Winter Shade in Phoenix
QUESTION: HI!! Found your blog searching for information on growing roses in the Phoenix area.
Very informative. I'm so glad to see you offer roses for sale as well!
I was wondering if you would recommend planting roses in an area that gets full sun all summer ( I am willing to try some sort of shade structure) but gets very little sun from November through January. (our backyard is north facing).
This area gets a smattering of early morning sun a month before and after winter solstice.
Thanks for your time and thank you so much for your website!
ANSWER: Hi Nicole! It depends on when the rose blooming season occur in your area of Arizona.
If the planting area is shaded when the roses are dormant, but sunny during blooming season, it would be ok.
I would give it a try. That's the only way to find out.
If you would like to try growing roses, with less that 6 hours of sun, I recommend the Iceberg roses.
They even bloom in partial shade for me in Los Angeles.
You would need to shade them in summer with a parasol during the hottest part of the day, and deep water every single day then.
Hope this helps you out.
